Bond: Licensed to mint moolah

In good ol’ England, whose Majesty 007 is honour-bound to serve, Casino Royale raked in more on its first days of release than any previous James Bond film: £1.7 million of tickets were sold in the UK, which is more than double of the previous record-holder, Die Another Day (released in 2002). At the US box-office, however, the Daniel Craig-starrer could not match up to the flurry of Die Another Day in terms of biggest Bond openings. Casino Royale also topped a number of international venues, including India, Russia, Greece, Thailand and Taiwan. The film’s great opening run has put paid to speculations as to whether Craig – the first ‘Blonde’ Bond – would be able to carry out the panache that any actor needs to qualify as the world’s most-loved spy. Meanwhile, Casino Royale is also going to be the first Bond film to be screened in China, where it is expected to open in January 2007. The earlier 007 films had been shot down by the Chinese censor board as being too violent and sexual in nature.
