The bonhomie

The bonhomie, however was not restricted to off -shoring alone, and thankfully so. India had one more ace up its sleeve, the huge untapped market. A number of MNCs were beguiled by the opportunity to serve the Indian middle class. These MNCs did bring competition, but also tied up with local firms and brought global expertise. Manufacturing in India is now resurging thanks to localization done by MNCs like LG, Samsung, Nokia & Motorola.

Bond: Licensed to mint moolah

In good ol’ England, whose Majesty 007 is honour-bound to serve, Casino Royale raked in more on its first days of release than any previous James Bond film: £1.7 million of tickets were sold in the UK, which is more than double of the previous record-holder, Die Another Day (released in 2002). At the US box-office, however, the Daniel Craig-starrer could not match up to the flurry of Die Another Day in terms of biggest Bond openings. Casino Royale also topped a number of international venues, including India, Russia, Greece, Thailand and Taiwan. The film’s great opening run has put paid to speculations as to whether Craig – the first ‘Blonde’ Bond – would be able to carry out the panache that any actor needs to qualify as the world’s most-loved spy. Meanwhile, Casino Royale is also going to be the first Bond film to be screened in China, where it is expected to open in January 2007. The earlier 007 films had been shot down by the Chinese censor board as being too violent and sexual in nature.

Ranging from the threat of nuclear terrorism to ‘saving jobs’, there is surely no dearth of reasons to justify the need to spend £65 billion over 30-years period to meet the proposed objectives. That too, at a time, when the whole world is worried about the spread of nuclear weapons? Recently, the pariah regime of North Korea has been literally blackmailing the world by announcing a successful series of nuclear tests. Iran too is threatening to go nuclear!

Naxals are just as much a menace now as cross-border terrorism

For once, the Maoists should realize that even police personnel, who they kill, belong to the lower middle class and even to poor families, on whose behalf Maoists pretend to fight benevolently. It is precisely because of this mindless violence that Naxals have lost mass support. At this rate, it is not far away when most parts of India would be mired in a bloody civil war like situation unless drastic steps are taken by an otherwise myopic Indian Home Ministry. Bob Dylan asked it right, “How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?” The Indian politicians have been calculating for decades now...
